Senator Rand Paul has joined the chorus demanding greater transparency surrounding the gold reserves held at Fort Knox, urging Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency to investigate the matter.
Senator Rand Paul , a Republican from Kentucky, has called on Elon Musk 's newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to investigate the gold reserves held at Fort Knox , a U.S. military base. Paul's request stemmed from an online exchange on X, formerly known as Twitter, between Musk and another user who expressed a desire to inspect the gold holdings at Fort Knox .
The user's post prompted Paul to urge Musk and DOGE to scrutinize the estimated 4,580 tons of gold stored at Fort Knox, a figure that equates to approximately 147.3 million troy ounces according to the U.S. Mint. While the Mint emphasizes that the gold hasn't been moved in many years, except for small quantities used in purity tests, Paul believes greater transparency is needed.During an appearance on Fox & Friends, Paul reiterated his call for increased scrutiny, stating, 'The more sunlight, the better.' He also highlighted the inherent value of gold, implicitly recognizing its role in bolstering the dollar's worth. This isn't the first time Paul's family has raised questions about Fort Knox's gold reserves. His father, Ron Paul, a former congressman from Texas, led a congressional hearing in 2011 focused on audits of U.S. gold reserves. Ron Paul expressed concerns about the lack of access to the gold for congressional review, stating that no one from Congress had been allowed to view it in nearly four decades. He also criticized the limited information provided in audit reports from both the Mint and the Inspector General
