Waymo, a Google-founded company specializing in autonomous vehicles, is bringing its driverless taxi service to Austin, Texas, in 2025. Users can hail Waymo's self-driving cars through popular rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft.

The year is 2025, and in addition to some major technological advancements in aerospace engineering and touch-to-pay grocery shopping, Texas is poised to advance on another future-forward frontier — robot taxis. That's right, self-driving rideshares are coming to the Lone Star State this year, and drivers may see them on roads as soon as within the next few months.

Waymo, a Google-founded company that specializes in using autonomous vehicles to ferry city travelers from one location to the next, is set to usher in the technology. Users can hail Waymo's self-driving cars through popular rideshare apps, namely Uber and Lyft, to travel within city limits. As of Tuesday, Waymo's driverless vehicles are fully operational in three cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix. Additionally, the company is testing out its technology in three more cities: Miami, Atlanta and, of course, Austin. Although the tech is still in its trial period, it's primed for 24/7 public use 'across 37 square miles of Austin,' according to its city service site. 'Let the Waymo Driver take the wheel from Hyde Park, to Downtown, to Montopolis and beyond.' Since Waymo's 2017 launch in Phoenix, there's been widespread public concern over the safety of driverless rideshares, especially amid software glitches that have caused malfunctions like repeated honking, disabled sensors and vehicles traveling in circles. While these software glitches have not resulted in any deaths — in fact, studies have shown that Waymo drivers have actually reduced the severity of crashes with other vehicles — the company has been proactive with issuing software updates and recall notices
