Scientists demonstrated that slow wind comes from locations where the open and closed coronas meet.
The European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter has brought scientists closer to decoding slow solar winds’ mysterious origin.
Northumbria University researchers used data from the Solar Orbiter’s first close encounter with the Sun to learn about the formation of slow solar winds. “Because Solar Orbiter travels so close to the Sun, we can capture the complex nature of the solar wind to get a much clearer picture of its origins and how this complexity is driven by the changes in different source regions,” said Steph Yardley, lead researchers from the Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne. The solar wind comes from the sun’s corona, the outermost layer of its atmosphere.
A closed corona is where magnetic field lines form closed loops, remaining anchored to the Sun’s surface at both ends.
