There is an underrated sci-fi series available on Prime Video, and one of its 15 episodes raises the bar for an upcoming post-apocalyptic TV show.

Anthology TV and animated TV often fly by viewers' radars unnoticed. Maybe it's because they don't feature recognizable faces in prominent roles. Whatever the reason, Prime Video's animated anthology, Secret Level, hasn't gotten the attention it deserves since premiering on the streamer in December 2024. This series, created by Tim Miller, comprises 15 8-19 minute shorts set in the worlds of popular video game franchises.

There are episodes centered on Dungeons & Dragons, Mega Man, Unreal Tournament, even Pac-Man. Of particular note is episode 5,"Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear". Based on the 2024 video game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which in turn is based on Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe,"And They Shall Know No Fear" is a fantastic adaptation of this multimedia franchise.

Titus, the main character of the game series, once again stars in the episode where he and his squad of Space Marines come face-to-face with a Chaos demon who uses the Marines' darkest fears to brutalize and murder them. When the creature reaches Titus, it learns the limits of its power on a fearless man. It's a fantastically animated short that manages to tell a compelling and deep tale in just a few minutes.

Warhammer 40k is slowly making its way to television, with a series adaptation supposedly in production for Amazon. The studio should look to its own show for guidance. Secret Level Shows How To Do The Warhammer 40k Universe Right Secret Level shows what a great Warhammer 40k show should look like. Though it's only 10 or so minutes long,"And They Shall Know No Fear" captures the essence of the universe and makes it understandable for a new audience.

Titus and his fellow Marines match the designs that fans love, and are animated to properly depict their weight and strength. It's immediately obvious these are super soldiers, but good guy super soldiers. The demon who appears in the short is also an excellent execution of a difficult idea in Warhammer 40k. The demons in this series are incredibly strong, capable of impossible feats, and can cause insanity in those who look at them.

The titles Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer 40k, 40k, and to a lesser extent, Warhammer, are used interchangeably in the fandom. The short nails the look and the feel of the main antagonists of the franchise, without too many words, executes on a classic good guy vs. bad guy battle that uses magic, melee weapons, and guns, all the big tools of the franchise. It's grim, dark, but a little bit toy-like, as any good Warhammer 40k series needs to be.

Henry Cavill's Upcoming Warhammer 40k Series Has A Lot To Live Up To While we really don't know much about the upcoming Warhammer 40k TV show, we do at least know that Amazon Prime is attached to be the distributor, and Henry Cavill will serve, at the very least, as executive producer. Cavill has frequently espoused his appreciation for the tabletop games, and he seems like a good steward for the show.

However, it won't be an easy universe to adapt, particularly if the show wants to be as good as the Secret Level episode for an entire season or more. The Warhammer 40k universe is one of constant warfare, changing power scales, and heroes and villains for every faction.

It's an easier universe to tackle for one scene in a short than it would be for an entire series. The storytelling and plot will be tricky.

Amazon and Cavill can set themselves up for success by making sure they do the little things right, like the animation, art, and tone, all of which they can look to Secret Levels for inspiration. 55 8.4/10 Secret Level 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Animation Sci-Fi Fantasy Action Adventure Release Date December 10, 2024 Network Amazon Prime Video Cast See All Creator Tim Miller Powered by Expand Collapse
