Residents of Seattle's Ballard neighborhood are raising concerns about the safety of 8th Avenue for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Home surveillance videos show frequent accidents and near-misses, prompting calls for action from the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT). Neighbors are demanding improvements like crosswalks, bike lane protections, and speed control measures to make the busy thoroughfare safer.
People in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood say 8th Avenue has become too dangerous for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.
Home surveillance video provided to KOMO News highlights what neighbors are calling a major issue with visibility for those trying to cross 8th from the surrounding neighborhoods between Leary and 70th Street. Cameras captured everything from T-bone crashes, to people failing to stop for pedestrians and others getting rear-ended for stopping just in time.." It's a petition website where a group is gathering signatures to improve their neighborhood street.
“We cross this street pretty much every day, so I’d like to see more improvements, more crosswalks potentially,” said resident Kameron Heyen. "It doesn’t feel that safe to cross the street." “I’m determined to bring crosswalks to 51st and 53rd, to clean up the Goodwill parking to make it safer for cyclists riding uphill north of 65th, and to make sure that intersection at 70th and 8th Avenue is safer for all users,” City Councilmember Dan Strauss told KOMO, adding he's in talks with SDOT to discuss the needed fixes.
