Scream 6 star Melissa Barrera reunites with the slasher film's directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for a Universal Monsters remake.
Melissa Barrera reunites with Scream 6 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for their upcoming mystery Universal Monsters movie. Barrera first joined the Scream franchise in 2022's reboot as new series lead Samantha Carpenter before reprising the role in the 2023 sequel. Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett helmed both Scream features and the 2019 horror flick Ready or Not, and are founders of production company Radio Silence alongside Justin Martinez and Scream producer Chad Villella.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT As reported by Deadline, Barrera has been cast in Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett's Universal Monsters project following its recent announcement. While Barrera's character and the mysterious film's premise remain under wraps, the project will be written by Stephen Shields, with revisions by Scream 6 and Ready or Not screenwriter Guy Busick.
How The Universal Monsters Franchise Came Back From The Dead With Scream 6 impressing at the box office following its release, there has been much interest in where Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett go next. The two directors have quickly made a name for themselves as voices within the horror genre to keep an eye on, not only with their successful revival of Scream, but also with their original effort Ready or Not.
While Universal's overly ambitious shared Dark Universe reboot of their Monsters franchise quickly fell apart upon the release of Tom Cruise's The Mummy, the studio found success with smaller, less intertwined takes on the horror icons. Leigh Whannell's modern approach to H.G. Wells' monster in The Invisible Man earned acclaim and showed that audiences were keen on revisiting Universal's cast of creatures when told in an interesting way.
Barrera's performance as Sam Carpenter has earned her praise from critics and viewers. As such, it's promising to see her reunite with the film's directors for a fresh take on a beloved classic Universal Monsters character. As Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett continue to gather the cast for their mystery movie, it will be thrilling to see where they go next.
