Brown giant pandas are pretty rare in China. Just seven brown pandas have been found in the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi province.A huge team of scientists finally finishes decoding the last 8% of the human genomeThis 14-year-old male specimen, Qizai, resides at the Louguantai Wild Animal Breeding and Protection Center in Xi’an. He was discovered as a cub and quickly taken in by the center.Along with Qizai, the researchers sequenced the genes of one other brown-coated giant panda in the wild.

Both brown pandas carried two copies of the mutated Bace2 gene, leading to a 25-base pair deficiency.
