Built in 1962, Skyline is a longtime landmark and one of Utah's top schools for generations of kids. This summer it will be demolished as crews continue their massive $200-million construction project to rebuild the entire campus.
Craig Barlow, a Skyline teacher for 36 years retired on the last day of school. He says he's going to miss the relationships he's made over the years with students, staff and parents. We were with him as he walked the hallways one last time and packed up his classroom. As you can imagine he has lots of stories about the old school. "The building is a love-hate relationship," he says. The roof has leaked.
Despite the leaky roof and an unreliable air conditioning system Skyline is a beloved school, and always near the top when it comes to national and state testing results. Thousands of former students and people from the community recently turned out to a super reunion event to say goodbye to the school. People signed the walls with messages and graduation dates. Many families have a long line of Skyline students. Craig Barlow pointed to a wall signed by a family.
Syd Lott, a 20-year Skyline teacher was also a student here. On his last day he had his students knock a hole in his classroom ceiling where hundreds of soda cans rained down onto the floor. Lott says they came from "his" former soda drinking teacher who, for years, would toss the cans into a small hole in the ceiling. It was his goal to bring down those cans, which he did on the last day of school. Lott is excited to move into the new school, but it's not easy for him.
When students return after the summer break, they'll move into the new academic building just completed next door. Once the old high school is demolished this summer, construction will begin on a new auditorium and fine arts center. The entire construction project at Skyline High is scheduled to be done in December 2026.
