The FBI said a "manifesto" was recovered by law enforcement following the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, which killed three individuals.
The suspects appeared to hate many different groups of people, not just one specific group.
“They didn’t discriminate on who they hated,” said Mark Remily, special agent in charge of the FBI San Diego office. Police said the two male suspects, ages 17 and 18, appeared to have died from "self-inflicted gunshot wounds" following the shooting. Police officers found the two suspected male shooters dead inside a car. In their preliminary investigation, the FBI found that the two suspects met online and shared a "broad hatred" toward different religions and races.
Authorities also uncovered 30 firearms and a crossbow. They searched two residences in connection with the investigation. On Monday morning, hours before the shooting, officers received a tip from the mother of a runaway child. The child is one of the suspected shooters, police said.
He is a 17-year-old male, authorities added.
“She believed her son was suicidal and she began to share information that several of her weapons were missing – her vehicle was missing – in addition to her son," Wahl said. "She also said her son was with a companion and that they were dressed in camo and that is not consistent with what we would typically see from somebody who is suicidal. "
