The Bill has not been seen by the public or the Opposition. That will change on Thursday morning as all MLAs get a chance to see specifics.

Carla Beck admits there aren’t a lot of levers for her NDP Opposition to pull as the Government of Saskatchewan is bent on using the notwithstanding clause to push through legislation pertaining to pronouns and names used in schools by children under 16.

“I don’t think my house leader would like me revealing our hand too much on this but we will continue to gather and consult with the public,” Beck said.Premier Scott Moe could not offer any details on Bill 137, also known as the Parents Bill of Rights Act, but has redoubled his commitment to use the notwithstanding clause to push it through.

As for how the province crafted the policy Moe said his government has heard from “thousands” of parents. When asked why his government didn’t consult stakeholder groups like teachers, students and especially transgender and nonbinary students Moe said “no one said we didn’t.

It added that family involvement is “crucial and whenever possible, it is best to ensure that all important adults are on the same page when it comes to issues of development like gender identity.” But, the associations contend, that is not a reality or possibility in all cases. “We are proposing that we sit Friday and Saturday this week, not Sunday and then we said Monday to Sunday, the following week,” said Harrison.
