“At a certain point, just about everyone on the plains could speak Michif. Now there are less than a hundred fluent speakers left,” he says. “To learn the language, at the moment, you really have to go through them. They are the only ones who know all the complexities of the language. However, they are sharing their knowledge with people like me, and this way we can increase the number of speakers.”
LaMontagne says Métis locals have recently received funding from the government to help with the preservation and revitalization of the language by providing programs for families, beginners and intermediates. Classes are already available and more are coming in the near future.“I can feel the energy whenever I come together with my peers and Language Keepers. They are revitalizing the language. There is definitely a future for Michif,” he says.
