The Baldwin County School System appeals a ruling by the Alabama High School Athletic Association that cleared the way for Saraland to play in the Class 6A football playoffs.
The Spartans are scheduled to play at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in the second round on Friday.
The appeal went to the District 1 Board, which then kicked the appeal to the AHSAA’s Central Board of Control for a final decision on the matter. The Central Board will now schedule an emergency hearing to determine Saraland’s fate. A date for that hearing has not been released.that no representatives of the Saraland school system were allowed to appear at the hearing.
The AHSAA investigation last week centered around whether a 15-year-old Saraland star player’s family made a bona fide move from Baldwin County into the Saraland School District. If the Central Board votes the family did violate the AHSAA’s bona fide move rule, Saraland would have to forfeit all games he played in – which is every victory – and would likely be ousted from the playoffs.
“While this may have an impact upon their season, we do not believe Saraland Schools, or its superintendent, did wrong,” the statement read in part. “In our appeal to AHSAA’s District Board, we even complimented Saraland on the way in which they handled this matter, and we asked that the players on their football team not be penalized and they be allowed to continue in the playoffs.
