Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is on the verge of breaking the NFL rushing record, needing just 278 yards in his final two games to surpass Eric Dickerson's 2,105-yard mark set in 1984. However, Barkley's quest faces challenges from opposing defenses and the uncertain availability of quarterback Jalen Hurts due to a concussion.
After rushing for 150 yards in the Eagles' 36-33 loss to the Commanders on Sunday, running back Saquon Barkley now has 1,688 yards for the season. He needs 278 yards to break the NFL record of 2,105 yards set in 1984 by Eric Dickerson . Dickerson achieved this feat in 16 games, recording over 100 yards in 10 of them and exceeding 200 yards in two games. Barkley, 27, needs to average 139 yards in his final two games to reach 2,106 yards.
His quest begins against the Cowboys on Sunday, followed by the season finale against the Giants, both at Lincoln Financial Field. Barkley has already surpassed 139 yards in six games this season. He has accomplished something only two other players in NFL history have achieved: four rushing touchdowns of 60-plus yards in a season, joining Adrian Peterson's MVP season in 2012 and Jim Brown as the only three to accomplish this feat. However, his pursuit of the record faces two potential obstacles: the defenses of the Cowboys and Giants, and the uncertainty surrounding quarterback Jalen Hurts' availability. Hurts suffered a concussion during the Washington game, leaving his status for the Cowboys game in doubt. He must clear the league's concussion protocol to play. When Hurts exited early in the first quarter against Washington, the Commanders packed the line of scrimmage, daring Kenny Pickett to beat them. The strategy worked, as Barkley amassed 109 yards in the first quarter but was held to 41 yards over the remaining three quarters. 'They loaded the box, but we get it each week,' said Barkley. 'The dynamic of Jalen definitely helps. A lot of things we do in our run game is designed with Jalen. It’s kind of hard to continue to run the same stuff when he’s not in there. We just didn’t make the plays.' The key question now is whether Barkley can continue his strong performance against the Cowboys and potentially rewrite history
