Unemployment rate reaches 4 percent, its highest level since February 2022, even though employers added jobs at a rapid pace.
San Diego County employers added 6,900 jobs in June as the region’s economy continues to put pandemic woes behind it, with the strongest hiring occurring in restaurants, bars and personal care services.
The state Employment Development Department released local unemployment figures on Friday. The June jobless rate of 4 percent was up from 3.5 percent in May and 3.4 percent in June 2022. Layoffs in certain industries also could be playing a role in the higher unemployment rate, said Gin. From May to June, San Diego County saw a big gain in tourism jobs, particularly in food services and bars, which added 2,500 workers.
“We like to see construction numbers jump during the summer,” he said. “We need housing. We need infrastructure, so I was hoping we would see a bigger trend.”While that is an impressive number, certain industries still haven’t recovered to pre-pandemic employment levels, said Kelly Cunningham, an economist with the San Diego Institute for Economic Research.
Healthcare employment is thriving, however. It reached the highest employment level ever recorded for San Diego County, said Cunningham. One complication in this recent jobless data is that June’s employment numbers have not been adjusted to account for seasonal factors that can skew the economic picture.
