Those lost in service to their country were remembered with Taps, fly-overs and prayers at several Memorial Day ceremonies

The men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country were remembered in ceremonies throughout the county Monday as people paused and reflected on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“Today we remember that freedom isn’t free, and the American way of life and the democracy that enables it must be guarded with unremitting vigilance,” he said.Paul “Chappie” Ward, the Midway’s chaplain, spoke about how those lives made a difference to the nation. Gloria said all four of his grandparents came to San Diego because of the military, and he remembers “growing up crawling around the floor of VFW Halls all around the county and going to events like this one.”

“I can’t explain why I’m here today and she’s not,” said Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland after recalling his many close calls. “I know it’s not fair. All I can say is I try to make her sacrifice matter. And although nothing I can ever say will fill the holes she’s left in your hearts, I hope you can take some comfort in knowing Megan did make a real difference and died doing what she believed in, surrounded by soldiers and Marines who loved her like sisters.

“It’s important for us to carry on his memory,” she continued. “And I always encourage my friends to bring their children so they can grow up understanding.”
