A San Diego County man was driving on Interstate 5 in Fresno County when his vehicle veered off the road and into the California Aqueduct. His passenger, a 24-year-old woman, died in the accident.
A San Diego County man was involved in a fatal freeway crash in the Fresno area over the Presidents Day weekend. The Chula Vista resident was driving a southbound 2019 Honda Accord on Interstate 5 south of state Route 41 when, for reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle veered off the roadway and plunged into the California Aqueduct shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver managed to escape the vehicle and swim to the edge of the canal.
However, his 24-year-old passenger was trapped inside as the car filled with water and sank. Emergency responders, including a dive team, eventually recovered the woman's body. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family.
