The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) is hosting an adoption promotion to reduce the impact of recent wildfires on animal shelters. Adult dog and cat adoption fees are reduced to $25 during the Bissell Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters event.

The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) has launched a new adoption promotion to help alleviate the strain on shelters caused by the recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. From Wednesday, January 15th, through January 26th, the Bissell Pet Foundation is sponsoring an Empty the Shelters event, allowing the SDHS to significantly reduce adoption fees for adult dogs and cats to just $25.

This initiative aims to free up space in SDHS shelters to accommodate a surge in animals displaced by the Eaton and Palisades fires. The fires have resulted in a significant number of animals needing rescue and care. SDHS personnel are receiving numerous calls for welfare checks on animals left behind during evacuations, including even koi fish that require relocation to safer locations. In addition to dogs and cats, the SDHS has also taken in other rescued animals, such as nine birds – chickens and pea hens – from Altadena. A primary goal of the SDHS's efforts is to support the Pasadena Humane Society, which has taken in over 400 animals injured or left homeless by the wildfires. The agencies are particularly seeking homes for large dogs (50 pounds or more) and canines who require to be the only pet in their household. SDHS shelter-staff teams began traveling north to assist wildfire-displaced pets and their owners on Thursday and will continue their work until at least Tuesday. The public can browse adoptable pets online at sdhumane.org/adopt and sign up to foster animals at sdhumane.org/foster. The San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at its campuses in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside, and San Diego
