The group of 46 firefighters from agencies across San Diego County will assist with flood rescues, search operations and emergency management in North Carolina

Personnel from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and members of the Urban Search and Rescue California Task Force 8 team prepare to drive out to North Carolina to assist with search and rescue efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday the immediate deployment of a group of firefighters from around San Diego County who will head to North Carolina and assist communities affected Hurricane Helene.

The specialized unit, known as California Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 8, will work closely with the Federal Emergency Management Administration and three other similar task forces from other Southern California agencies to also handle incident management and emergency operations, the governor’s office said.

Officials said the team will get to North Carolina by driving semi-trucks, vans and SUVs with personnel and equipment.
