San Antonio is poised to receive nearly $3 million in funding to begin drafting a study addressing connectivity between the East Side and downtown.
– San Antonio is poised to receive nearly $3 million in funding to begin drafting a study to address connectivity between the East Side and downtown.“While the purpose of transportation is to connect, in too many communities past infrastructure decisions have served instead to divide,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.
The program comes by way of the Inflation Reduction Act, which passed in 2022, and President Joe Biden’s Investing in America Agenda. Funding in this round supports 132 projects in various planning stages. “We’ve identified that we want to develop alternatives to help reconnect downtown and the near East Side by minimizing, or retrofitting that barrier, which is I-37,” Houston said at the committee meeting.
The councilman urged caution regarding significant changes that could potentially impact communities, which he said are already experiencing vulnerability and gentrification.
