In my mind, this felt deeply connected to the sacrifices that so many mothers have to give, and this notion of bodily autonomy for a mother—the discourse that we’re having in relation to humans. It’s hard to be a mother, like no matter what species you are; we all have these different trade-offs. And this is a route into making people care more about the creatures.
Yeah. It’s a really good question. It’s something that, when I was starting out, I really struggled with. At my first internship atI remember an editor was like, “Oh, I don’t like this journalist’s work. It’s too anthropomorphizing.” I’m 100% pro-anthropomorphism. I think a lot of scientists are as well. It is such a natural way to build connection with life forms that are not like us in a certain way.
