San Antonio wanted $50M for airport expansion. Corpus Christi got funding. S.A. didn’t.

“When it comes to the expansion of the San Antonio airport, you want to be competitive for federal grants,” said Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, a former City Councilman and attorney who specializes in public-sector bond sales. “I would say it’s absolutely a gut punch.”San Antonio International is roaring back from the COVID-19-induced collapse of the travel industry two years ago, and the metro area’s population is booming.
In its program’s first round, the FAA was looking to fund airport-terminal projects that were ready for construction. But there are currently few “shovel-ready” projects to fund at San Antonio’s airport. “It’s not a big deal because San Antonio only recently put that plan together. There are major policy decisions buried within the city’s master plan — you don’t just throw this together,” Cisneros said. “We were not at the same place as maybe other cities were.”
