Astros closer Ryan Pressly will play for Team USA in next March’s World Baseball Classic, a person with knowledge of his plans said Thursday.

LAS VEGAS —

Pressly saved 33 games and finished the regular season with a 0.89 WHIP. He converted six save opportunities in the postseason while allowing one unearned run in 11 innings. Pressly procured the final out during Game 6 of the World Series, a foul out from Nick Castellanos that will forever be a part of Houston baseball lore.

Pressly pitched in five of Houston’s six World Series games. He allowed four of the 22 Phillies he faced to reach base, forming a compelling case for World Series MVP honors that instead went to shortstop Jeremy Peña. Team USA is scheduled to open the World Baseball Classic on March 11 against Great Britain at Chase Field in Phoenix. Team USA’s pool includes Team Mexico, Colombia, Great Britain and Canada.

Pressly and outfielder Kyle Tucker will represent the Astros on Team USA. Jose Altuve is slated to play for Team Venezuela, which will be managed by Astros first-base coach Omar López. José Urquidy has committed to play for Team Mexico, too.
