After an uneven stint at Netflix, mega-producer Ryan Murphy is reportedly returning to Disney — here’s what the move means for Monster season 2.

Ryan Murphy is leaving Netflix and reportedly heading to Disney, but what does it mean for Monster season 2? Murphy made headlines in 2018 when he joined Netflix for a $300 million deal. Along with Shonda Rhimes, he became one of the biggest TV producers to sign with the streaming service.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy will exit Netflix at the end of his five-year deal. Murphy, who is also known for FX's American Story franchise, is expected to reunite with Dana Walden, who worked closely with him at 20th Century Fox TV and is now the co-chair of Disney Entertainment.

Why Is Ryan Murphy Leaving Netflix? Despite his recent success with The Watcher and Monster, Murphy has not had the greatest rate of hits at Netflix. Many of his projects, whether he was attached as a producer or more directly involved as a writer and director, received initial buzz but quickly petered out and failed to resonate with subscribers. Those included Hollywood, The Politician, Ratched, Halston and the star-studded movie The Prom.

Separate from his output, there was also discontent at Netflix because of the carve-out in Murphy's contract which allowed him to work on his FX shows, like American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Feud, while at Netflix. That discontent among Netflix execs reportedly only grew when Murphy created the spinoffs American Sports Story and American Love Story for the Disney conglomerate while at Netflix.

The biggest reason for Murphy's exit may ultimately come down to personal relationships. The producer once said that he'd be buried at Fox, which falls under the Disney umbrella. In addition to his strong relationship with Walden, he also has a long history with FX head John Landgraf. But for the time being at least, this change doesn't look to impact Monster season 2, which will focus on Lyle and Erik Menendez.
