Reviewing the film from Rutgers football's loss to Wisconsin.
Wisconsin cornerback Ricardo Hallman returns an interception 95-yards for touchdown as Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, left, chases during the first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, in Madison, Wis.
The divide is clear: Rutgers has shown it is good enough offensively to run right past bad defenses, barreling through Northwestern , Virginia Tech and Temple , gaining 636 yards on 129 non-sack carries in the process. But its rushing attack stalled against Wisconsin and Michigan , gaining a combined 144 yards on 44 non-sack carries , and it was unable to make up for it in the passing game.
- In two games against Michigan and Wisconsin, he threw for 361 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 27-of-56 passing, a 48.2% clip that rises to 53.5% when adjusting for three drops in those games, per PFF. Simon’s impressive cameo will not start a quarterback controversy in Piscataway, but it is a reassuring stretch for Rutgers that it has a capable replacement if Wimsatt misses any time this season. The Scarlet Knights shuffled some pieces around, moving guard Curtis Dunlap to the left side to the right and starting backup Bryan Felter at left guard, and they appeared to have solidified one side of the line.
Both running backs are coming off of injuries of varying degrees, which could explain the situation. But if that is the case, why are they on the field at all, especially if they only appear when the game is effectively over? The other explanation, which Schiano hinted at when asked last week about when he expects Brown to return to his old self, is that Monangai and Benjamin are getting the carries because they are ahead in the pecking order.
