With arms from NATO allies, Ukraine wants to take the offensive approach against Russia. But a think tank has other plans on how Russia should handle this.
A Russian think tank wants to be bring back fear of nuclear war to prevent Ukraine from attacking targets on its mainland.Dmitry Suslov, a member of the prominent think tank Council for Foreign and Defence Policy, has proposed that Russia conduct a “demonstration” nuclear explosion to thwart Ukraine from using its arms to attack targets in Russian territory.
The US does not favor such a move, fearing an escalation in the conflict. However, other nations, such as Poland and the UK, have expressed support for Kyiv’s right to use the weapons they have supplied to strike Russian targets, a view also supported by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. Citing the views of other nations in his piece, Suslov said that such moves by NATO members were bringing the conflict to a different level.
According to Suslov, “The political and psychological effect of a nuclear mushroom cloud” when it is shown on TV channels around the world will remind Western leaders that the fear of nuclear war is what has prevented wars between major powers since 1945. Suslov believes that Western nations have forgotten this fear, and a demonstration nuclear explosion will instill this fear back into their minds.Suslov’s views were in print and nationally broadcast through his TV show Bolshaya Igra .
