Ruckus, presented by Da Camera Feb. 18 at Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall, answers an intriguing riddle: when is a baroque ensemble not a baroque ensemble?The New York-based group describes itself as a “shapeshifting, collaborative baroque band with a visceral and playful approach to early music.” In technical terms, Ruckus is a continuo band, meaning a collection of accompanying instruments including but not limited to harpsichord, organ, lute, cello, bassoon, and viola da gamba.
As Ferguson tells it, Ruckus is a tight-knit bunch. Several members passed through Juilliard415, the prestigious school’s principal period-instrument ensemble. Other connections stretch back even further: she’s known bassist Doug Balliett since the two played in a youth orchestra together at age 13 or 14.
“What we’re doing actually feels to me very, very in line with how Bach himself might have approached this if he were living today,” she continues. “The uniqueness for me is that we're really getting to the spirit of communal music-making [and] the idea that he really felt that no piece was finished until the musicians got their hands on the music and really added their takes on it.”
