Rory McIlroy claimed a two-shot victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday, a course he referred to as a “cathedral of golf.”

McIlroy, 35, closed with a final-round six-under to finish 21-under-par for the tournament, two shots ahead of Ireland’s Shane Lowry in second. The victory was McIlroy’s 27th on the PGA Tour in what was his first appearance on the circuit this year. The Northern Irishman also leaves with a new trophy and $3.6 million in prize money.

He also had to stave off pressure from other competitors, with six players having a share of the lead at various points across the final round. “It’s a really cool way to start the season,” McIlroy said. “To get this win this early means a great deal, and hopefully I’ll keep the momentum going into Torrey Pines in a couple weeks’ time.” McIlroy’s victory comes after making a ball switch, a change he “sort of stumbled upon” and credited for his hole-in-one.
