In the past three games, he made 8 of 13 shots, getting seven assists without a turnover. He split time with Daishen Nix as a backup against the Heat and Trail Blazers, checking in before Nix in those games. Nix got the call before Washington against the Spurs, responding with his best game of the season and a career-high nine assists, with Washington playing only in the final four minutes when the Rockets cleared the bench.
They bring different strengths and styles, with Nix more geared toward initiating offense and Washington toward finishing plays. But in just 32 minutes over the past three games, Washington has displayed the skills he brought back from the Vipers. “He had an abbreviated summer and preseason because he had little nick-knack injuries,” general manager Rafael Stone said of the decision to send Washington to the Vipers. “Part of it was he just had to get back into basketball shape, which he did. But also, just to get used to the speed of the game and physicality, I think it helped. He is still going through that.
“He has an extraordinarily high basketball IQ,” Stone said. “That translates perfectly. Those guys always translate pretty quickly because they see the game so easily that the mental side is an easy adjustment. For him, it’s more about can he not have physical disadvantages, can he be a professional athlete physically. … if he sees an action sooner, can he get there before you? That’s something he’s working on and will continue to work on.
