Houston Rockets guard TyTy Washington Jr. drives the ball up court in the first half of game action against the Miami Heat at the Toyota Center on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022 in Houston.TyTy Washington Jr. did not make his NBA debut on Thursday, but the game was in many ways, his first. The Rockets rookie guard had played in two other games, but those were both to finish up blowouts.

Against the Miami Heat on Thursday, he checked in with two minutes left in the first quarter and again to start the fourth quarter, stepping into the role normally held by second-year guard Daishen Nix. Rockets coach Stephen Silas said that Nix did not feel well, but also indicated that he opted for Washington to fill in with the second unit.Washington, who was told before the game that he would be playing, responded, sinking one of his two shots, the same floater that he had knocked down for his only previous NBA bucket, and getting five assists in 12:11 playing time.

“I think I could have been a little more aggressive on both ends of the ball,” Washington, who was selected with the 29th pick in the draft last June, said. “I felt like I made the right plays, got my teammates shots, good looks, defended well. I think just really becoming more aggressive and like everybody says, ‘just be comfortable.’”
