A military-grade AI-powered humanoid robot named Phantom, built by the Foundation Robotics Lab startup, made its public debut as a DJ at San Francisco's Temple Nightclub. This unexpected appearance at the 'GigaParty' networking event sparked conversations about the evolving role of robots in society.
San Francisco, a city notorious for its tech elite, witnessed an unexpected takeover last weekend. A military-grade AI-powered humanoid robot, Phantom, built by the Foundation Robotics Lab startup, stepped onto a different kind of battleground – the decks at Temple Nightclub.
Phantom, a sleek black machine programmed to spin tech house beats, took center stage at the so-called 'GigaParty,' a peculiar networking event slash club night celebrating the 'first 25 years of the 21st century — and the next 75!' Guests, who paid anywhere from $35 to $3000 for tickets, seemed to get their money's worth as Phantom, whose creators insist on using he/him pronouns, made his public debut as a DJ. This marked the robot's first public appearance. Mike LeBlanc, the co-founder of Foundation, a 13-year veteran of the Marines, proudly proclaims that Foundation is the only robotics company currently crafting 'humanoids' for American national defense. Although this claim remains unverified, it's true that Foundation, despite having the Department of Defense as a major contractor, isn't currently deploying its humanoid robots into combat. According to LeBlanc, they are primarily used for aircraft maintenance and refueling in remote areas. Phantom's appearance at the GigaParty was a significant departure from his usual duties, but LeBlanc sees it as a cultural diplomacy mission. 'We are not trying to apologize for the strength of robots,' LeBlanc stated. 'So for us, this is the perfect unveiling because this is what our robot is. This is a fun moment.' Phantom's presence at the GigaParty, while perhaps a bit out of place at a stuffy San Francisco networking event, was undeniably striking.
