Third in San Diego Section history in coaching wins, Rob Gilster has been at Valley Center High since it opened, establishing a program that has won league and CIF titles -- and gained more

Gilster has done the same thing for hundreds of young men over his career. One of those was AJ Reilly, Trevor’s oldest brother.

“Rob was the toughest coach I ever played for. But he also cared the most. He wasn’t afraid to tell a player he was doing something wrong. But he also told kids they were doing it right. What people don’t realize in that addition to coaching football, Gilster is also the ASB Director and helped coach girls basketball and track.

“He’s such a positive influence. His impact on the Valley Center Community can’t be underestimated. The influence he has had on young people is unmatched. Just amazing.”His larger-than-life figure on the sidelines could rub opponents the wrong way. But all respected the job he has done.
