Labour’s lacklustre showing should persuade the Tories that a leader with intellectual grip could deliver another victoryknow how it feels to lose in Wandsworth. I did, in the 1978 local election that began 44 years of Tory rule in the borough, ending yesterday. But in Fairfield ward, where I was a Conservative candidate, I missed by 12 votes. It’s horrible, spitting ashes amid others’ victory, but I learnt a lot from that campaign.
