Riot Games, maker of the worldwide hit video game “League of Legends,” will keep its requirement that employees’ sexual-harassment or discrimination complaints be handled via arbitration, rejecting demands from workers who walked out over the issue.

Workers at Riot Games in L.A. walked off the job May 6 to protest the company's policy that sexual harassment allegations must be handled via arbitration.

“We’re disappointed leadership doesn’t seem to be considering any major changes to their active policy,” employees Indu Reddy, Ronnie Blackburn and Jocelyn Monahan — three leaders behindFive women have sued Riot, claiming disparities in pay and alleging that the company promotes men at the expense of women.

In the past year, Riot has suspended its chief operating officer for two months over alleged misconduct, and brought in a Harvard Business School professor to advise the company on “cultural transformation.” Monahan said workers had tried to sway the company’s leadership for several months. Employees lost faith in the talks when management petitioned to force arbitration.“Obviously a walkout is not the first thing you do,” she said. When the organizers circulated a document in early May calling for a walkout, they cited Google’s reversal in the wake of protests there.

Riot, founded in 2006 by two friends from business school, has become a giant in the world of gaming and esports. The culture of gaming has been beset by conflict in recent years, starting with a controversy known as Gamergate that served as something of a preview to the contentious online conflicts of the Trump era.
