Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Anson Mount and Rebecca Romjin discuss comedy in the Lower Decks crossover directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn praise the "ridiculously fun" crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks directed by Jonathan Frakes. Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, titled "Those Old Scientists," will see Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome bring their animated characters, Ensigns Bradward Boimler and Beckett Mariner, to live-action. Frakes described the episode as a "flat-out comedy" which will blend live-action and animation.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT At the press junket for Strange New Worlds season 2, Screen Rant took part in a roundtable interview with Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn. We asked the actors about Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome guest starring in the crossover episode with Jonathan Frakes directing. Read their responses below:

Screen Rant: The crossover with Lower Decks is coming up. Jonathan Frakes effusively praised both of your comedic chops. What was it like doing comedy with Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid? Anson Mount: Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen guest stars come with such ownership of the material before. Rebecca Romijn: [Tawny and Jack] both have such great backgrounds in improv, and they never did the same thing twice. They did something different, they took it off the page, and played with it in every single take. It was so fun. And having Jonathan Frakes there was very important to massage the two worlds so that it was cohesive [because] they come from this animated show, and now they're on the Enterprise, which is a very, very different tone.

"Fun" seems to be the operative word whenever Strange New Worlds' cast and crew describe the crossover. Leaping from animation to live-action hasn't been attempted by Star Trek before, but the actors agree Jonathan Frakes was the ideal director to find a common tone between the two very different shows. As Anson Mount noted, Quaid and Newsome have played Boimler and Mariner on Star Trek: Lower Decks for 3 seasons already, and they know their characters inside out.
