Rick Grimes returns in a new BTS image from The Walking Dead Rick & Michonne spinoff. Andrew Lincoln departed the Walking Dead universe all the way back in season 9. But hope of Rick’s return remained alive through reports of a possible feature film centered on the character. That film never materialized, but Rick will nonetheless be back in an upcoming Walking Dead spinoff show reuniting him with Danai Gurira’s Michonne.
Rick & Michonne won’t be delivered until 2024, but fans can rest assured that work is underway on the spinoff, as confirmed in a new BTS image celebrating the return of Rick Grimes. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY “Dad’s back,” says the official Walking Dead Twitter, re-posting an image shared earlier by a TWD fan account. The image doesn’t give away anything about the spinoff's plot of course, but merely shows Lincoln exiting his trailer to get to work on the show’s New Jersey set.
Rick & Michonne indeed figures to provide more answers about the CRM, and what exactly happened to Rick after he and Jadis swooped away. A tiny tease was even offered by the Walking Dead series finale, which showed Rick apparently being snatched up by the CRM after an escape from their Philadelphia stronghold. What all happens next to Rick is anyone’s guess, but it’s certain a reunion with Michonne is at least in the offing.
And after that, could Rick Grimes finally meet the end he’s managed to escape for all these years? Giving Rick a fitting ending certainly must be on the agenda for Rick & Michonne showrunner Scott M. Gimple. That doesn’t necessarily mean Rick has to die, but a noble, self-sacrificing demise would clearly be one good way to bid the character farewell.
