We chat with TheValet director Richard Wong about crafting his new hulu comedy film starring EugenioDerbez & Sweaving:
Hulu's The Valet tells a hilarious and poignant story about a fake relationship between Antonio, an ordinary valet played by Eugenio Derbez, and Olivia, a movie star portrayed by Samara Weaving. After paparazzi catch billionaire Vincent Royce cheating on his wife Kathryn with Olivia, Antonio is enlisted to pose as Olivia's new lover.
Richard Wong: The French comedy is obviously a classic in its own right. When we were approaching the American version of it, I don't think there's any more American story than the immigrant family story. Because we're telling that story, I think it very much distinguishes from the original. Richard Wong: We really weren't trying to emulate the original in any way.
Richard Wong: My favorite part about what we're talking about socially is the ability to see that — there's a scene in the movie after the crash where they're both going home alone and it's one of the few times in the movie where we get to see them alone. I think that the fact that they share — one is a huge, gigantic movies star and the other is just your everyday valet — but they both share a really similar thing on a human level.
Richard Wong: Well I'm huge fans of both, so I was impressed but not surprised, I guess. I just think they're both so smart. When we talked about the characters, we all were very much on the same page about what we were trying to do and how we were trying to do it. They both worked so hard. They had so much input and so much to bring to make these characters real. I think Samara's character, that's a difficult character to balance out the likability of her.
