Watchdog head steps back from BBC chair probe

Mr Shawcross revealed his decision to step back from the probe in a letter to the chair of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

The former Goldman Sachs banker has admitted he set up a meeting between Sam Blyth, a wealthy Canadian and distant relative of Mr Johnson, with Cabinet Secretary Simon Case in late 2020.Image caption,In a BBC interview last week, he said Mr Blyth had offered to act as guarantor on a loan - reportedly worth up to £800,000 - after reading about the PM's money troubles in the media.

He was advised not to have any further involvement in discussions about the PM's personal finances, he told the BBC, as it could be perceived as a conflict of interest. Mr Sharp said he would not quit, but expressed some regret over offering to engineer the meeting with the cabinet secretary.
