Rey’s upcoming New Jedi Order movie will be a reminder of just how much Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker failed both Kylo Ren and Ben Solo.
Rey’s new Star Wars movie will make Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s Kylo Ren failure even worse. For the first time since the inception of the saga, Star Wars will continue a trilogy just a few years after its ending. Rey’s New Jedi Order film will take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, although the film itself could be eying a 2026 release.
Ben Solo’s Death Was Not A Problem Kylo Ren’s death was one of The Rise of Skywalker’s most divisive creative decisions. On one hand, Star Wars has been killing off villains, redeemed or not, since the very first movie. The Rise of Skywalker was promoted as the end of the Skywalker saga, and killing off Ben Solo would surely help with that perception. On the other hand, Kylo Ren’s arc in The Rise of Skywalker felt like a rehash of Darth Vader’s story in Return of the Jedi.
Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie Means That The Skywalker Saga Is Not Over The announcement of Rey’s new Star Wars movie was surprising in the sense that Star Wars was expected to go for something new following The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm never announced that a “Star Wars 10” was in the works, and projects such as Rian Johnson’s trilogy or Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron were described as new stories focused on new characters.
Rey’s New Star Wars Film Would Have Been Better With Ben Solo In It Rey’s story was tied to Kylo Ren’s throughout the entire sequel trilogy, both from a narrative standpoint and in-universe. Rey and Kylo were portrayed as “two sides of the Force” since Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a dynamic that Star Wars had not really explored in the movies. Star Wars: The Last Jedi suggested that Kylo Ren could be redeemed and teased a potential romantic relationship between Rey and Ren.
