At age 37, Kholodenko sounded like a seasoned artist. Eleven years younger, the Massachusetts-born Lu was as well equipped technically as you’d expect of a major competition winner. But in a program of Handel, Schubert and Chopin he sometimes worked too hard to make a statement.He was nothing if not an expressive player, and the audience responded enthusiastically.
Schubert may have known he was dying when he composed his two sets of Impromptus, but there’s no handwringing in the Op. 90 set. Relatively light pieces, perhaps they represented a bit of escapism. They too often felt overinflated in Lu’s hands, though, freighted with emotion imposed from outside. I hear the first one with more forward motion, the second a little less rushed, the third’s songlike melody less fussily tugged and pulled about. The music’s fresh-faced forthrightness got lost.variations from the E major Suite were as perfumed, pushed and pulled as Lu’s Chopin, to quite unstylish effect.
