The Chula Vista theater's artistic director James P. Darvas leads this two-character Steven Dietz play set in the early days of the AIDS epidemic

A lone vacant chair can fill an entire room with emptiness. Imagine two. Then three. Then four. Then more.

At OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista, the eloquence of Dietz’s 30-year-old play set during the terrifying early years of the AIDS epidemic is honored by two heartfelt performances — from the theater’s artistic director James P. Darvas as Jody and its marketing director Salomon Maya as Carl — and by thoughtful direction from Teri Brown that emphasizes the characters’ compassion and steadfast bond in the face of fear.

Darvas so deftly underplays the repressed Jody that when he does break down at one point, the moment is all the more crushing and raw. Maya’s Carl is ever the goading, jousting counterpoint, play-acting and indefatigable for Jody’s benefit.
