The house, which had been abandoned and deteriorating over the years, will be turned into a museum.

Local researchers say the dilapidated, fire-damaged rowhouse in Camden is where the iconic civil rights leader stayed in 1949 and planned his first sit-in.

The home on Walnut Street was where King lived during weekends and summers from 1949 to 1951 while attending the now-closed Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania. He had graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta at age 19 before starting theology school. According to historical records uncovered by Haddon Heights resident Patrick Duff in 2015, King, his roommate McCall and two friends planned to visit the now-closed Mary’s Café in Maple Shade in 1950.

At the café, the group requested beer and glasses from the owner, Ernest Nichols, who refused, and said he could not sell packaged goods after 10 p.m. on Sundays. When King then asked for ginger ale, Nichols again declined service. On Saturday, dozens of people attended the groundbreaking ceremony held next to the boarded-up home. A large sign reading, “The Future Home of the MLK Museum,” stood in front of the site.
