Researchers create first supermode opticalresonator HarvardResearch

The period, depth, and duty cycle of the gratings used for converting a forward TEmode is 316.5 nm, 500 nm, and 40%, respectively. In this case, the mode conversion efficiency reaches a maximum near 1550 nm wavelength. The sweeping range of wavelength and the number of unit cells in the grating is 1350–1750 nm and 1–50, respectively.

We now discuss the relationship between the resonators, the mode converters, and the directed graphs in more detail. As shown in Fig. a, cascaded-mode resonators consist of two sets of converters that convert forward-propagating modes into backward-propagating modes and vice-versa. One can construct the directed graph of a cascaded-mode resonator by associating each mode with a node and each mode converter with an edge between the nodes.

Migration direction in a songbird explained by two loci - Nature CommunicationsMigration direction in a songbird explained by two loci - Nature CommunicationsThe genetic determinants of long-distance migration in birds are largely unknown. Sokolovskis et al. tracked genotyped hybrid willow warblers from a migratory divide in Sweden and find that autumn migration direction is consistent with a dominant inheritance pattern of two large effect loci that interact through epistasis.
