The bill aims to strengthen Social Security for the rest of this century. Its key features includes an increase that will amount to a 2% boost to the average benefit, a new minimum benefit that will be 25% above the poverty line, cutting taxes on non-Social Security income and changing the formula upon which annual cost-of-living adjustment are calculated, among other changes.
A full Ways and Means committee hearing on Social Security is scheduled for July, followed by a mark-up in September, Larson said, citing committee Chairman Richard Neal . The bill currently has more than 200 congressional co-sponsors.How minorities fall behind Almost 50% of African American beneficiaries rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their retirement income, Shelton said.
