Black Pastors United for Education released an open letter to Gov. Josh Shapiro on Tuesday urging innovative changes to Pennsylvania’s public education system.

Black Pastors United for Education held a press conference at the Capitol’s main rotunda on Tuesday, with BPUE Founder Rev. Joshua C. Robertson reading an open letter addressed to Gov. Josh Shapiro.Signed by more than 50 pastors and religious leaders throughout the state, the letter advocates for greater educational freedom within the commonwealth, a press release said.

Black Pastors United for Education is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization comprised of congregations working to improve children’s schooling.Enact Lifeline Scholarships, delivering on his campaign promise for children in Pennsylvania’s lowest-performing schools. Oppose cuts to public cyber charter schools, which serve a higher percentage of low-income and non-white students than traditional school districts.“In the interest of mobilizing action for children, we want everyone, not just Governor Shapiro, to hear what we are advocating for,” Robertson said. “Religious leaders throughout the commonwealth agree: every child in Pennsylvania deserves educational options tailored to their unique needs and interests.

Black Pastors United for Education also formally announced its organization during the press conference. BPUE prides itself on carrying the legacy of clergy who were instrumental in the civil rights movement, the release said. BPUE has previously hosted statewide town halls with state lawmakers.
