University of Oxford research shows that simpler light sources like LEDs can greatly improve performance in optical AI applications.
Partially coherent light sources from erbium-doped fiber amplifiers have shown up to 100 times faster AI processing than traditional lasers.Lasers, known for their precision and single-color emission, have long been the cornerstone of advanced optical applications—from cutting-edge computing technologies to fiber optic networks.
This research, led by the University of Oxford in collaboration with institutions such as the Universities of Muenster, Heidelberg, and Ghent, reveals that simpler light sources can significantly enhance computing power in emerging technologies like optical artificial intelligence . The prevailing assumption has been that more coherent light sources directly translate into superior performance, offering higher resolution and precision. For instance, in photonic AI accelerators—emerging technologies that leverage photons rather than electrons for AI computations—partially coherent light sources can enhance computational efficiency dramatically.
In doing so, the researchers found that the parallel processing capabilities of AI computations were significantly amplified. In a photonic accelerator with multiple input channels, this configuration increased processing speed by a factor of N, where N represents the number of channels. To test their system, the team used the partially coherent light source to diagnose Parkinson’s disease by analyzing patients’ gait, achieving an impressive classification accuracy of 92.2%.
