Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has reported that several People’s Liberation Army Navy aircraft have flown into its airspace without authorization. According to reports, around 56 warplanes crossed the Median Line of the Taiwanese strait early on Wednesday .
The median line of the Taiwan Strait serves as the unofficial boundary dividing the 112-mile waterway, separating the self-ruled island from mainland China. The defense ministry also stated that a total of 66 PLA aircraft and drones had been detected in the island’s air defense identification zone. Of these, 56 were warplanes, the highest number on record for a single day. According to reports, this event occurred because the PLA was conducting exercises East of the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.Taiwan also reported that another 26 PLA aircraft were sighted southeast of Taiwan on Thursday . These aircraft flew as close as 33 nautical miles to Taiwan’s southernmost tip.
“These coordinated operations are also about practicing potential joint assault tactics for future battles against Taiwan,” he said. In case you are unaware, Beijing views Taiwan as part of China and is willing to reunite it by force if necessary. Most countries, including the U.S., do not recognize Taiwan as independent. However, the U.S. opposes any attempt to take the island by force and is committed to supplying it with weapons.Although Beijing has never officially recognized the median line in the Taiwan Strait – drawn by a U.S. general in the 1950s during the Cold War – the PLA had never crossed it until 2019.
