When did the Rangers’ lefty learn he’d be starting against Baltimore? Heaney: “Probably about the same time that you guys did.”
No qualms from the 32-year-old left-handed pitcher, who acknowledged there were some “moving parts” in regards to Friday’s decision. Regarding Saturday’s matchup: the Orioles hit lefties better than righties and can run out a balanced lineup against Heaney. In their regular-season finale, they started five left-handed hitters against Boston righthander Tanner Houck; in their last start against a southpaw , they started five righties and two switch hitters.
Heaney has pitched in one prior postseason game: with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, he pitched three relief innings against the San Diego Padres in the NLDS. His two starters this season against the Orioles have been vastly different; on April 4, in his season debut, he allowed seven earned runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Nearly two months later, he pitched seven innings of one-run ball at Camden Yards. His last start — and his last few weeks — could be more important.
