Jung is making good progress in his return from a fractured left thumb, but the Rangers know that they can't rush things.
“That’s when you can overdo it,” Bochy said. “We’ve just got to be careful. We don’t need any setbacks. We’ve got to still try to be smart about this, hold him back even a little bit so he doesn’t overdo it.”
One thing is for sure, Bochy said: Jung, who could be anywhere from six-to-seven weeks removed from baseball by the time he returns, will need rehab at-bats. Triple-A Round Rock will finish its regular season on Sep. 24 and is currently first place in the Pacific Coast League’s eastern division.Depending on how many rehab games Jung would need to play before he was declared ready to face MLB pitching again, it may leave him with just one week — or less — left in the regular season to return.
On the topic of injured All-Stars, Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi pitched another bullpen session on Friday at Globe Life Field. There was hope that he’d return to Texas’ rotation before the calendar reached September,. The Rangers are continuing to operate with the belief that he won’t need to make a rehab start before he rejoins the staff.
