Russia’s planned deployment of nuclear-armed anti-satellite weapons into space would violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which Moscow signed.

The advanced radar SWOT satellite, short for Surface Water and Ocean Topography and designed and built at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles, is seen in an artist's rendition created in February 2015."They have recently made unfounded allegations, in particular, against Russia, regarding plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space.

"They have recently made unfounded allegations, in particular, against Russia, regarding plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space. Such fake narratives, and this story is unequivocally false, are designed to involve us in negotiations on their conditions, which will only benefit the United States,” In citing the “agreement on preventing the deployment of weapons in outer space” drafted in 2008, Putin was referring to the “Treaty on Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space and of the Threat or Use of Force Against Outer Space Objects,” orthe Sino-Russian draft treaty mainly because it did not take into account the ground-based anti-satellite systems that China and Russia are actively developing.

The draft’s broad use of language allows manipulation. For instance, “weapons in space” cannot be defined because many space systems have dual purposes.
