The world has embraced mainstream Indian cinema in the post-pandemic era, thanks to international hits such as S.S. Rajamouli’s historical epic RRR. The film’s box office success, and subsequent win at the Oscars, has paved the path for other Indian movies to attract crowds across the world. And this weekend, the inevitable is set to happen as RRR sees its opening weekend record broken by the new Telugu-language action epic, Pushpa 2: The Rule.
✕ Remove Ads According to the studio Mythri Movie Makers, Pushpa 2 grossed ₹294 crore globally on its first day of release. This converts to around $35 million. Most of this total came from the film’s home country of India, although over $4 million came from North American theaters. Pushpa 2’s $35 million opening day haul eclipses the previous record for an Indian title, held by RRR .
In its home country, Pushpa 2 broke records across the board, delivering the biggest-ever debut in multiple languages. India has several regional-language film industries that operate mostly independently of each other. Films like Pushpa 2 and RRR originate from the south of the country, while last year’s back-to-back blockbusters Pathaan and Jawan are Hindi-language films, originating from the state of Maharashtra.

The original movie emerged as one of the earliest post-pandemic hits in India, grossing around $45 million worldwide in its entire global run. Pushpa 2 should be able to eclipse this total by day two.
